Appointment times for the doctors are normally 10 minutes and for the nurses 15 minutes. If you require a longer appointment please tell the receptionist when booking.
Please bear in mind that the appointments during extended opening hours are intended for patients who cannot get to us during the day because of work commitments or commitments of relatives/carers who will have to attend surgery with them. If you are able to attend in the day time it will enable us to offer more of these late appointments to those who can’t.
To make an appointment please call our main switchboard number on 01384 271241 and then go to Option 1 to speak to the receptionists to book an appointment with one of the GPs or Practice Nurses.
You can also arrange to book appointments on line through https://patient.emisaccess.co.uk our electronic booking system. Our receptionist staff will be happy to help you to organise this.
Please be aware that members of our team are asked to enquire as to the reason for needing an appointment, to assist with ensuring you are booked to see an appropriate clinician, all information disclosed will remain confidential.
If you need to book a routine follow-up appointment with a particular GP you can make an appointment up to four weeks in advance. Many routine appointments are for patients who have a long-term or chronic condition that needs monitoring on a regular basis. We will let you know when your next appointment is due with the practice nurse or doctor either by post, telephone or email. If this time is not convenient, please telephone reception to re-arrange it. It is important to continue your regular check-ups, even if you are feeling well. Routine appointments are available during normal surgery hours with the practice nurse and/or doctor. We hold regular clinics for Diabetes and COPD with our specialist nurses but are also able to offer appointments at any time to fit in with your work/lifestyle.
Routine consultations with a Doctor or Nurse are offered on an appointment basis during specific times as mentioned previously. However patients may need to attend the surgery with a medical emergency outside these hours. These patients will be seen and assessed by a medical professional who will decide on the urgency of the condition and either treat appropriately if the problem will not wait for a routine appointment or refer to secondary care.
We are a very busy practice, and providing some same day appointments makes it easier for you to see a doctor quickly. If you can phone as soon as possible from 08.00 we will try to see you that same day.
The purpose of ‘triage’ is to ensure that all patients are dealt with fairly by an appropriate member of the team and to ensure that problems are dealt with urgently if necessary. Every morning we have allocated triage time for our nurses to speak to patients who may wish medical advice about a medical condition and are unsure if they need to see a GP. The GPs will also speak to patients after morning surgery and at the end of evening surgery. When you request such an appointment the receptionist will tell you that you will be placed on the triage list and that one of the medical team will call you back. You will be asked for your name, telephone number and a brief description of the problem. All staff adhere to strict terms of confidentiality. We will endeavour to contact you as soon as a clinician is available and therefore ask that you remain available for this time – if your condition deteriorates you should telephone the surgery again or in the event of an emergency call 999 for an ambulance.
The surgery is very busy every day but particularly on Mondays and Fridays especially during the winter months. If your appointment is not urgent, you can book in advance up to four weeks for a GP of your choice. Recently we have had a large increase in the numbers of patients failing to turn up for their appointment. We do realise that sometimes it is not always possible to keep booked appointments so If you let us know as soon as possible if you can’t attend, we can then make it available for another patient. Missed appointments are very costly both in time and resources to the NHS so we urge you to cancel in time for us to offer the slot to someone else who may urgently need to be seen.
If you only need advice from your doctor please telephone between 09:00 – 11:30 on weekdays.
Our receptionists are usually the first point of contact and are here to help you. They have a lot of information to hand and in most cases will be able to help with your enquiry, ensuring you see the most appropriate clinician. However, it is your right to request to talk only to the doctor. Anything that is discussed with the receptionists or any other member of the team is treated in strict confidence. You have a right to be treated courteously, and our receptionists also have a right to be treated courteously by you. We can offer a degree of privacy in a separate room if your enquiry is sensitive. Please respect the privacy of other patients by standing well back from the reception desk until your turn.
